The Taoiseach says a cap on rents and a ban on evictions may be extended beyond the end of June.

The measures were put in place in response to the Coronavirus crisis a number of weeks ago.

However housing charity Threshold says they should be extended as people will be in financial difficulty all through the summer.

CEO John-Mark McCafferty said: “Two thirds of the people contacting us due to Covid-19 have lost their incomes, and some are building up substantial rent arrears.”

“The Government moratorium is very welcome for these tenants but is due to expire on June 27th."

He said he measures must be extended in order to reduce the fear and distress currently being experienced by tenants.

Decision

Leo Varadkar says no decision has been made. But he says it will be considered;

"It was done on the anticipation that this pandemic, if you like, would last for less than 12 weeks but obviously if it goes on for longer we'll have to give consideration to extending a lot of those different temporary actions."

He went on to say; "That's not a decision we need to make now, its a decision that can be made in a few weeks time."
