Trinity College Dublin has confirmed its second case of coronavirus on the campus.

The college says a student from the Health Sciences faculty has tested positive and is receiving the appropriate care.

Earlier this week the university announced all lectures would be carried out online for the rest of the semester.

While parts of the campus were shut to stop the spread of the infection, including the Long Room which contains the Book of Kells.

First Irish Death

The news of the second case on the campus comes as the first death in Ireland from the virus was confirmed. The elderly woman who was being treated in Naas General Hospital had underlying health issues.

Forty three cases of covid-19 have now been confirmed in the Republic of Ireland, after nine more were confirmed last night.

Clinical Editor of the Medical Independent, Priscilla Lynch, says the criteria for testing has been broadened;

"So it's not just people who have come from the affected areas such as Northern Italy or China that can be tested now for covid-19 or those who have been isolated because of contact with a diagnosed case, it's been broadened now to include people where they have pneumonia or a severe respiratory condition."
