The first dentist school in Ireland in over 100 years has opened in South Dublin.
The state-of-the-art facility in Sandyford will train 20 dentists from this September. The RCSI centre is equipped with advanced clinical training infrastructure, including 55 phantom head simulation units, a full dental laboratory, and a 12-chair community clinical facility.
It's part of a strategy to ensure the next generation of dentists are trained in real-world, community-based settings.
Head of the school, Professor Albert Leung, says it should address the national shortage of dentists but it will take a while.
"This school of dentistry is the first new school in dentistry since 1913. It is based on a community access basis."
