The Dail has been told that a woman carrying a foetus with a fatal abnormality has been denied an abortion.

It's understood the Coombe Hospital told the woman to wait four weeks to see if she miscarries naturally.

Ruth Coppinger and Brid Smith said they had been contacted by the woman.

The woman told them that this is not what she voted for in last year's abortion referendum.

The Tánaiste, Simon Coveney, said the case was a matter for doctors and that the law is very clear.

Solidarity TD Ruth Coppinger said the fatal abnormality has been "certified by two consultants".

Deputy Coppinger accused the Coombe Hospital of "refusing her constitutional right, that we all voted for".

In a statement, The Coombe Hospital said it "cannot comment on individual cases".

"Maintaining a patient’s confidentiality is not only an ethical requirement for the Hospital, it is also a legal requirement as defined in the Data Protection Acts".

The hospital also denied its Board has a role in determining whether or not terminations can be carried out.
