Hundreds of pro-choice protestors gathered outside the US Embassy in Dublin today to make clear their support for abortions rights in America.

Earlier this week the US Supreme Court overturned decades of precedent and ruled that abortion is not a constitutional right and that the issue should be decided by state legislatures.

Many states have already banned abortion in the days since then and protestors are concerned that other social rights could be under threat as well:

“Contraception and same sex marriage could be under threat due to privacy laws,” Cllr Leah Whelan of Solidarity told Newstalk.

“America is on a crazy trajectory… [with] the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill and the attack on trans rights, now the attack on women.

“And it’s no coincidence that these things are happening simultaneously and they go hand in hand with each other.”

Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in a concurring opinion that the Supreme Court “should reconsider” whether rights to contraception and gay marriage are constitutional rights or similarly should be left to state legislatures to decide.
