Redeveloping the Ballymun Shopping Centre could be a "game changer" for housing in the area, according to a local businessman.

Bulldozers have been on site for a number of weeks to level the 8 acre plot, which it's hoped could eventually accommodate shops and hundreds of homes.

It is expected to be cleared and returned to Dublin city council by the end of December.

It's one of the last pieces of the regeneration of the north Dublin suburb, which began in the 1990s.

Redeveloping the centre, which is more than 50 years old, has been delayed a number of times.

Robert Murphy owns the local Supervalu and is Chairman of the Ballymun TidyTowns committee;

"I've always called it the jewel in the crown and it's a cracking site. The Local Area Plan has earmarked around 400 residential units and retailing so if that can happen on that site sure it's fantastic."
