Cameras to catch illegal dumpers in Dublin city still haven't been installed.
The CCTV was due to be operational on three streets in the north inner city earlier this year but a row between council departments has stalled the project.
The aim is to prevent, detect and prosecute incidents of illegal dumping and is focusing on hotspot areas. The first phase will see cameras added on Belevedere Place, Sherard Street and Summer Street North.
The north inner city has been repeatedly flagged as a litter blackspot in surveys carried out by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL).
Dublin City Council’s head of waste management, Barry Woods, told a council meeting yesterday they had expected the cameras to be added in January.
However they were told the CCTV couldn't be installed on existing public lighting poles;
"Some of the cabling that goes to power the public light also powers the traffic light. They're saying there's a risk that the CCTV cameras will be vandalised. If they're vandalised it could knock the traffic lights out."
Work is now underway to erect new poles to allow the CCTV to become operational, that will work off solar power. This is expected to be carried out within the next four weeks.
