Leaving Cert students have been told to prepare to begin their exams on Wednesday, July 29th.

The Education Minister said last night this should be the date that sixth year students should aim for. The start date will be confirmed in the next couple of weeks.

The state exams have been pushed back from their usual start in June due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Minister Joe McHugh says there were many concerns with other proposals put forward for the Leaving Cert;

"We want to make this happen and this is it not wanting to make it happen to put a burden on young people. We want to make it happen because we've looked at the predicted grading, we don't feel it's fair, we feel there's too much in here in bias."

Minister McHugh also said he will look at concerns raised over the financial cost of sitting the exams, which is €116.
