An investigation is underway into a string of burglaries in the Ballyfermot area of Dublin.

A number of homes on Oranmore Road, Moycullen Road and Claddagh Road were targeted during the early hours of yesterday morning.

During one incident a car, cash and other items were stolen.  The car was recovered crashed a short time later in the vicinity.

Elsewhere the occupant of a house reported a person attempting to gain to access to the property.

"The suspected offender attempted to flee the scene in a car and subsequently collided with a car on the premises" according to a statement from Gardaí.

Gardaí say so far no one has been arrested.

Local Sinn councillor Daithí Doolan says on the same night residents in another Ballyfermot estate had to deal with a suspected pipe bomb;

"I know the neighbours to which it happened to, they were terrorised. I think one poor woman in fact collapsed during this very stressful period when people should have been resting in bed, people should have been cocooning.

In fact they were out on the street having to be moved out because of this suspected pipe bomb attack. Outrageous and unacceptable."

A controlled explosion was carried out and the device was later discovered to be non-viable.
