A consultant obstetrician says women should be offered pain relief before having intrauterine devices fitted.

It's after hundreds of women shared differing experiences of the contraceptive on social media.

Some claim they weren't offered any pain medication before getting the coil inserted, while others say they were.

Dr Vicky O'Dwyer, Director of Gynecology at the Rotunda Hospital, says doctors should be giving women effective pain relief:

"Everybody experiences pain differently."

"So it's about offering people options."

"You know, medication, local anesthetic or general anesthetic."

"It is rare that we have to do this under general anesthetic but it should be an option."

"What I normally do when I'm inserting a coil is I would say, if this is getting too uncomfortable we can stop, there are other options."
