A new free-to-download app will be released in Ireland this Friday to help victims of domestic violence.

Bright Sky will offer location-based support services, and information on different types of abuse.

Users can take a short questionnaire, which will asses if they are in an abusive relationship.

If it suggests they are, it will give information on sexual violence, stalking and harassment.

Bright Sky also contains steps to consider if leaving an abusive relationship.

Detective Chief Superintendent Declan Daly described Bright Sky as an app "that will save lives".

The app will also let people who are being abused log photos, videos and voice recordings.

None of the content shared on the app will be kept on the phone itself.

It's hoped evidence collected through the feature could end up being used in court.

Bright Sky is a joint venture between Women's Aid and the Vodafone Ireland Foundation.

Sarah Benson from Women's Aid, hopes the app will help "achieve convictions".

She said their "biggest hope" is that photos, videos and voice notes will "gather the pattern of evidence" needed to keep women safe.

Emma Murphy, a survivor of domestic violence, said many women "don't know they're in abusive relationships".

She said "that comes from the perpetrator telling them they're crazy. It's narcissistic behaviour".

Bright Sky launched in the UK last year, and will be available to download for free in Ireland from Friday.

It will be availabe on both Apple's App Store and the Google Play Store.

Women's Aid can be contacted 24 hours on 1800-341-900
