James May has officially quit Top Gear, for now anyway it seems. There was widespread speculation as to whether or not he would continue on the show but he confirmed the news with The Guardian. He won't be returning without Jeremy Clarkson. He did say that the 'BBC haven't completely closed the door on Jeremy's return' so you never know about the future.
For now though, with Clarkson off the show, he said "me and Hammond with a surrogate Jeremy is a non-starter, it just wouldn’t work. That would be lame, or ‘awks’ as young people say.
It has to be the three of us. You can’t just put a surrogate Jeremy in and expect it to carry on. It would be forced. I don’t believe they would be stupid enough to try that.
It doesn’t mean I won’t go back, we may all go back in the future. It might just be we have a break from it. I don’t know."
He also added that there was “nothing to rule out” when asked about reuniting with Clarkson and Hammond for a motoring show on a rival broadcaster.
He did add on Twitter that he hasn't quit the BBC entirely.
I have not quit the BBC, just so you know.
