Ardal O'Hanlon has joined the cast of Derry Girls season 2.

Channel 4 says the Father Ted star will play “Eamonn, the awkward, middle-aged mummy’s boy of the Quinn/McCool extended family” in the highly anticipated new season.

Ardal is best known for playing priest Dougal Maguire in Father Ted.

Speaking to The Radio Times,  Nicola Coughlan (Claire) said Eamonn is a "real Irish stereotype" but that he's "not a priest".

“I think it’s something that everybody will recognise, and he completely gets it so on the money,” she said. “It was really surreal, just looking at him, because he’s such an iconic figure in Ireland, and he’s such a lovely man. He’s so good in it.”

O'Hanlon is currently starring in Death in Paradise on BBC One.

The first trailer for season two of Derry Girls was released this week.
