Around 12 thousand adults in Ireland are recorded to be problem gamblers.

New research from the ESRI has found ten of thousands more could be at risk.

It notes gambling addiction is more prevalent among young men, disadvantaged communities and people with mental health issues.

"There's a further 30,000 to 90,000 who are considered at risk of problem gambling, but we have strong reasons to believe these are underestimates because they are based on surveys.

"We now that people aren't necessarily willing to admit that they have gambling problems and these things tend to be concealed.

"The true figure is probably substantially higher."
