A crack down on scam text messages kicks in today.

Constant fake messages about toll and customs fees on your mobile have become the norm here but from today, these messages will now appear with a 'likely scam' label.

Comreg has set up an approved register of businesses that can contact customers or potential customers by phone.

Any company that hasn’t registered will now see their texts marked as a "likely scam".

8,000 organisations have signed up so far and from October unregistered texts will be blocked by phone operators.

It's hoped this will clamp down on scam texts which Comreg says cost up to €115 million a year.
