Phil Hogan is facing mounting pressure to resign after it emerged last night he was stopped by Gardaí for using his phone while driving in Kildare last week.

The EU Trade Commissioner admitted he stopped in the county, which is under lockdown, to pick up some work papers on his way to the Oireachtas golf event in Galway.

The function is under investigation for suspected breaches of public health guidelines after 81 people attended the dinner at a hotel in Clifden.

The Taoiseach and Tanaiste had called for him to consider his position, and while he said he apologised unreservedly, he stopped short of resigning.

Rise TD Paul Murphy says it isn't good enough to just ask him to consider his position;

"I think they should formally communicate in writing with the European Commission President and let her know that the Irish government has no confidence in the Irish Commissioner and I think that would likely result in her acting to remove Phil Hogan."
