Empty cylinders of nitrous oxide are as common as litter in some parts of Dublin.

This is the message being highlighted by local residents, who are warning people of the dangers of inhaling the gas for a quick high.

Photos online show dozens of the silver cartridges scattered in gardens and parks.

South Dublin Fianna Fáil Councillor, Shane Moynihan, says awareness on their usage is vital:

"What we've found is a lot of people are using these bullets for that quick high but ultimately they haven't been designed for human consumption so there's no way of predicting what sort of effect they're going to have on your body.

"They're nearly as common as litter in some places."
