Justice Minister Helen McEntee has asked for a review of security for politicians and staff at Leinster House to be carried out.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris will deliver the review by the end of October after a number of TDs and Senators were threatened and abused outside the Dáil on Wednesday.

Some politicians received death threats during and after the event.

Speaking in New York, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said he's no stranger to those:

"People make idle threats against each other all the time and I imagine this happens to journalists and teachers and nurses and business people so I think it's important that we put that in perspective."

The Taoiseach continued, "In terms of credible death threats there have been one or two and you know the Gardaí can deal with that."
