Ireland is banning single use plastics, including straws, cotton buds and cutlery.

The Environment Minister has announced a new plan to reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill.

Alongside banning single use plastics, the strategy will also see a fee placed on non-recyclable food packaging and other wrappers.

Earlier this year, the European Council approved an EU suggestion to begin phasing out single use plastics.

Back in March the European Parliament voted to ban their use in all EU member states by the year 2021.

Mindy O'Brien from Voice Ireland welcomed the decision.

She said "Recycling is good, but we have to look at how we prevent the creation of that waste in the first place".

England has announced it will ban plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds from next April.

Britain's Environment Secretary, Michael Gove, insists they are taking action.

He said he wants to make sure "we tread more lightly on this planet".

The EU ban on single use plastics by 2021 will ban the top ten most frequently found items polluting European beaches.
