More than 190,000 penalty point notices were issued to drivers last year.

The figures have been released by the Department of Transport under the Freedom of Information Act.

191,104 penalty point notices were sent out in 2019, an increase of 8 per cent or over 14,000 on 2018.

64 per cent of them related to speeding, jumping 10 per cent to nearly 123,000.

There was a 3 per cent rise in notices for holding a mobile phone at more than 27,000.

The figures are broadly in line with population lines. Dublin had the highest number of notices issued for penalty points offences at just over 39,000, followed by Cork with 19,000 while Leitrim had the lowest at 1,000.

Brian Farrell is from the Road Safety Authority;

"I think it needs to serve as a reminder to everyone out there you know who do take chances on the road, that there is a Garda presence out there and they are detecting drivers who are committing the killer behaviours."

There's also an increasing number of people being punished for driving without an NCT cert. More than 6,500 notices were issued for this offence last year, a rise of 15 per cent.

Another common offence is driving without insurance, with more than 4,300 notices.

In total, just over 11,500 people were disqualified from driving last year which is almost exactly the same as 2018.
