The head of Dublin City Council says he'd be prepared to cut down all the roadside trees in the capital.

According to The Sunday Business Post, Owen Keegan thinks it would reduce the local authority's exposure to personal injury claims.

Mr Keegan says it's too easy for people to sue the local authority when they trip in the street.

Dublin City Council has paid out €46 million in historic claims.

There are tens of millions more in cases yet to be finalised.

Dublin City Councillor Mannix Flynn says these payments wouldn't be necessary if the council managed the footpaths properly.

He said "I know there is a lot of liability cases in relation to people slipping and falling on broken pavements and footpaths.

"But Dublin City Council haven't rolled out a robust works programme to fix the footpaths."

He also called on the local authority to think twice about some of the projects it's investing in.

Councillor Flynn says many of them are completely unnecessary.

He said "I just don't understand how the same manager can turn around and want to spend 90 million euros on an unnecessary Library on Parnell Square.

"Also twenty odd million euros on an unnecessary white water rafting experience on the River Liffey.

"While, on the other hand, they can't get rid of a couple of leaves and manage a small amount of trees."
