Gardaí are searching for a gang who attempted to rob an ATM machine in Louth.

At around 4.30am, raiders were attempting to rob the cash machine at Bank of Ireland on Main Street in Dunleer.

Officers from the Armed Response Unit happened to be doing a patrol in the area at the time and came on the scene.

The raiders drove at Gardaí and at least one officer had to jump out of the way.

The gang made off in the direction of the M1 and across the border.

The ATM wasn't stolen during the raid but a significant amount of damage has been done to the building. A digger remains at the scene, which has been sealed off.

A hunt is now underway for the raiders involving the Gardaí and the PSNI.

It's not the first time this ATM has been targetted, raiders made a simliar attempt to rob the cash machine in November but fled empty handed.
