Get ready, cinephiles: Braveheart isn’t done yet. Mel Gibson is back—both in front of and behind the camera—for Braveheart 2: Sons of Scotland.

The sequel picks up decades after William Wallace’s martyrdom, with Gibson returning as a ghostly figure whose legacy inspires future freedom fighters.

The spotlight now falls on Robert the Bruce, portrayed by James McAvoy, as he wrestles with leadership, betrayal, and whispers of Wallace’s hidden heir. The first trailer teases misty highlands, brutal battles and a masked figure known as the Ghost of Wallace rallying Scotland to rebellion. Expect a mix of historical drama and mythic intensity, directed by David Mackenzie (Outlaw King).

Not content with myth alone, Gibson is also making a personal return to Ireland. From August 8–10, he’ll host events in Trim for The King John’s Summer Prom Festival, including a charity poster signing in aid of the Irish Equity Benevolent Fund. It coincides with the 30th anniversary of Braveheart and a lineup of concerts, film screenings, and cast appearances.

Despite Wizard of Oz–level flexibility with history, Braveheart shaped the modern epic genre with its emotional scale and stirring speeches—and Sons of Scotland is aiming for deadlier swordplay and deeper symbolism.

Tune in to World Wide Reb, weekday mornings at 8.45am on 98FM's Big Breakfast for all the latest entertainment news.
