Spending on clothing has increased by 50 percent since May, as restrictions on retail started to lift.

That's according to the latest AIB Spend Trend report which found consumer spending rose in sectors that were previously closed under Covid-19 restrictions.

In-store spending on clothes was up 1,443 percent on April, however online shopping for similar items was down 17 per cent.

Dublin recorded the highest increase in spending during May, followed closely by Kildare, Cork, Cavan, Sligo and Galway.

Despite uncertainty around international travel, spending on airlines increased by 132 per cent.

The report found consumers were spending more in hospitality last month, as restrictions on the sector eased.

Hotels saw a 67 per cent increase in spending, while restaurants saw a 10 per cent rise.

The report says those under the age of 25 recorded the biggest increase in spending followed by those over 65.

Its found consumers moved away from online shopping, instead choosing to spend their money in store as restrictions on non-essential retail lifted.
