Ireland’s President, Michael D. Higgins, is stepping into the music scene this autumn with his first-ever spoken-word album, titled Against All Certainty.
It’s set to drop on 5 September via Claddagh Records and features ten original poems, penned and performed by the man himself, with atmospheric backing music from renowned artist Myles O’Reilly.
Recorded in the historic surroundings of Áras an Uachtaráin, this project takes listeners on a journey through President Higgins’s life prior to his time in office—from childhood memories to moments of hardship and triumph. It’s an intimate glimpse into the poet-president’s reflections, neatly set to captivating original compositions.

Against All Certainty will be available in multiple formats—CD, vinyl, hardback book + CD, and digital download—and is already open for pre-order . Expect a companion video series to be released alongside the album, bringing each poem to life through visuals that trace the poignant narratives within.
For fans of Irish poetry and spoken-word, this marks a major moment—not only does President Higgins have four collections under his belt already, but this is his first foray into recorded audio.
