The cost of street parking in Dublin is set to rise significantly.

As well as increasing hourly rates, the City Council is planning to extend 'high demand' zones to more areas.

The biggest jump in price to take effect later this year could see an hour's parking go from €1.60 to €2.70.

Dublin City Councillor Eilis Ryan wants the extra money spent on encouraging people to use public transport.

She said she would "very much like to see "funding coming from things like car parking charges being ring-fenced for public transport".

However, she said she feels the government "is not interested in spending money on public transport".

Dublin City Councillors had already agreed to a 10% rise in on-street parking charges in high demand areas of the city.

It's now emerged that it wants to extend each of the high demand zones to cover more areas.

The new measures would make it more expensive to park near hospitals like the Mater, St James's and the Coombe.

The council will begin public consultation on the planned changes next month.
