DNA testing for pets has been suggested as one way to keep dog poo off the streets of Dublin.

The City Council has also been urged to make poo bags available for free at public bins.

Green Party Councillor Patrick Costello admits the ideas are novel, but believes they'll help.

Creating a DNA database of dogs is expected to cost around €40 per animal.

Councillor Costello believes the cost could be off-set by "increasing fines".

On the topic of supplying poo bags at bins, he questioned why they are currently made available in public libraries.

"I don't the last time you saw a dog doing its business in the library was", he asked.

He wants "a little roll on the side of the bin" to make them "widely available".
