Fencing off public spaces is the wrong approach in facilitating an 'outdoor summer'.

That's according to a Green Party MEP who says local authorities should create more public spaces by closing off areas to traffic.

It follows chaotic scenes last weekend in Dublin, Cork and Galway where large crowds gathered in city centres resulting in anti-social behaviour and littering.

Local authorities nationwide are to get a share of 4 million euro to provide additional bins and toilets to support an 'outdoor summer'.

Meanwhile, the OPW Minister has condemned the "reckless anti-social behaviour" at the bandstand in St Stephen's Green in Dublin yesterday.

A group of people gained access to the Victorian piece which had been cordoned off to protect the structure - and Minister Patrick O'Donovan has called on people to respect the site.

It comes as preparations are taking place nationwide at outdoor areas ahead of the long weekend.
