A plan to build a giant waste water treatment plant in North Dublin is coming in for criticism.

Irish Water says the proposed facility in Clonshaugh is needed to help cope with demand from Dublin's growing population.

However, locals fear it is too close to homes and parks, and could be noisy and smelly.

A plant is needed to share the load with the Ringsend plant, which is under constant strain.

The Ringsend plant almost always operates at above what it was designed to.

Works to upgrade it started a year ago, to try and meet demand from Dublin's growing population.

However, Irish Water says a second plant is still needed.

Sinn Féin TD for Dublin Bay North, Denise Mitchell, believes the current plan needs to change.

"The decision to locate this enormous plant so close to people’s homes and to businesses is totally wrong", she said.

Deputy Mitchell suggested "moving more towards localised treatment plants".

"Smaller localised sewage treatment plants greatly reduces the possibility of an environmental disaster", she said.

Deputy Mitchell said local residents felt they had been ignored in the process, and also said fisherman were very concerned what impact the plant could have on beaches and water quality.
