Michelle Keegan is set to make her long-awaited return to ITV, taking centre stage as Detective Inspector Emma Crane in The Blame, a gripping six-part psychological thriller adapted from Charlotte Langley’s debut novel.

Produced by Quay Street Productions, the series was written and executive produced by Megan Gallagher and developed under the eye of ITV’s Director of Drama, Polly Hill, alongside executive producers Nicola Shindler and Richard Fee. Produced by Matt Strevens, with Sara Huxley as co-producer, the first three episodes are directed by Bex Rycroft and the final three by Claire Tailyour.

The story unfolds when DI Emma Crane and her colleague, DI Tom Radley—portrayed by Douglas Booth—are called to investigate the death of a teenage figure skater in the seemingly quiet town of Wakestead. What appears to be a straightforward case soon spirals into a labyrinth of institutional cover-ups, lies and moral compromise, while the series also explores misconduct, exploitation and the pressures faced within the constabulary.

This marks a significant comeback for Michelle Keegan, as it is her first leading role on ITV since her portrayal of Tina Moore in Tina and Bobby back in 2017. The cast also features performances from Ian Hart—known for Mr Bates vs The Post Office—Matilda Freeman (from Passenger), and Nigel Boyle (familiar to many from Line of Duty).

Production is scheduled to take place this summer in and around London. The Blame will be broadcast on ITV1 and STV, and will stream on ITVX and STV Player.

With an intriguing mix of moral complexity, institutional drama, and interwoven romance, The Blame promises to be an electrifying addition to ITV’s drama line-up.
