Sinéad O’Connor remains one of Ireland’s most celebrated cultural figures. She achieved international stardom with her 1990 album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, which spent six weeks at No. 1 on the US Billboard chart and included the global hit “Nothing Compares 2 U”—earning her a Grammy and making her the first woman ever to win MTV Video of the Year.

Beyond her musical success, O’Connor was known for her outspoken activism, challenging sexism in the music industry and highlighting abuses within the Catholic Church. Her controversial appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1992—when she tore up an image of Pope John Paul II—remains one of her most memorable moments.
