The families of the victims of the Stardust fire are seeking legal aid for a fresh inquest into their deaths.

A number of campaigners held a protest outside Leinster House today, calling on the Department of Justice to grant funding for those currently ineligible.

They say the issue is causing 'undue distress' and needs to be addressed in order for a newly proposed inquest to go ahead.

48 young people died in the Artane nightclub fire on Valentines Day in 1981.

Speaking in the Seanad earlier, Minister for Public Health, Frank Feighan, said the matter of legal aid's being looked and families should have an answer shortly.

Antoinette Keegan, who lost two of her sisters in the tragedy, has said many families cannot afford the legal costs.

She said, "€8.2 million was set aside from the budget for the inquest. All the other legal teams involved in this have got their legal funding, but the families of deceased victims have to apply for legal aid. We're the injured party in this, it's not right."
