Stephen Ferris has announced his retirement from rugby.

The Ulster back row suffered an ankle injury in November 2012 which kept him out of the game for 16 months. Ferris made his return in March during Ulster's 26-13 win over Llanelli. Sadly, his comeback would only last for four games.

Ferris racked up a century of appearances for his province, and was an important member of the Ireland squad following his debut in 2006.

The Portadown man would go on to win 35 Ireland caps. During his international career he was an ever-present in the 2009 Grand Slam success and an key player at the 2011 World Cup. Ferris was also recognised with a place on the Lions tour in 2009.

In breaking the news of his retirement, Ferris thanked his team-mates and family as well as the IRFU and the medical team at Ulster, adding, "I have had a great career, met many wonderful people and hang up the boots with no regrets."
