Sport Ireland to conduct robust review into IABA, Dunne files complaint

The Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) has requested Sport Ireland to conduct a robust review into the governance of the association.

Chairman of the IABA's Board of Directors Ciaran Kirwan appeared in front of an Oireachtas Committee on Wednesday, and admitted there were issues with governance within the association.

Sport Ireland CEO John Treacy told the Committee that that review is already underway.

Last week, the IABA's Central Council voted to remove membership from the Leinster Provincial Council, the Connacht Provincial Council, and the Dublin County Board.

In June, all three bodies withdrew their support for the IABA's Central Council in a row over deferred elections. The board of the IABA has stalled on electing two new directors - a measure passed at the 2019 AGM.

Kirwan's appearance in Dáil chambers came on the same day it was revealed that High Performance Director Bernard Dunne had lodged a formal complaint with the IABA.

Dunne alleged his position was undermined by an anonymous SWOT Analysis Position Paper, which was sent to IABA members in June.

The former WBA super-bantamweight champion claimed the document was unfairly critical, and served only to undermine his position.

Addressing the matter in front of the Committee, Kirwan described the SWOT Analysis Position Paper as "malicious", but claimed not to know who was behind the document. In a letter seen by the Irish Times, Dunne names an individual he believed created the paper.
