Gennaro Gattuso will not be the next boss of Tottenham according to reports, with the club still seeking a replacement for Jose Mourinho.

The Athletic claims that the Italian World Cup winner, who recently quit Fiorentina, will not be offered the job.

Gattuso is believed to have held talks with the Spurs hierarchy, as the deal to hire Paulo Fonseca hit a roadblock.

Tottenham have recently appointed a managing director, Fabio Paratici, who is to work with the incoming boss. He has spoken to Fonseca and Gattuso.

The North London club were believed to have held discussions with former manager Mauricio Pochettino, now at Paris Saint Germain, and the ex-Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, but any negotiations that occurred came to nothing.

Mourinho was sacked back in April.

Tottenham finished seventh in the Premier League and there is supporter disquiet, especially as the future of star player and England captain Harry Kane is up in the air.

Rumours of a Gattuso appointment heralded a backlash on social media, where the hashtag #NoToGattuso trended.

The mercurial Gattuso only spent 23 days in charge of Fiorentina.

He has attracted headlines for the wrong reasons in the past, making controversial comments about the role of women in football and describing same-sex marriage as 'very strange'.
