There was disappointment for Rob Heffernan this morning in the 50 kilometre race walk at the European Championships in Zurich.

The World Champion pulled out of the race with just 10 kilometres left.

He had been struggling to keep pace with the leaders, as he sat in sixth place when he dropped out.

Yohan Diniz took the race in a World record time of 3 hours, 32 minutes and 33 seconds.

Brendan Boyce placed 16th in the race, in a Personal Best time of 3.51.34.

Elsewhere this morning, both Paul Robinson and Ciaran O'Lionaird reached the final of the 1500 metres.

Robinson finished fourth in his heat to qualify automatically, while O'Lionaird went through as a fastest loser.

John Travers finished 14th in his heat, so failed to qualify.
