The far right is being accused of weaponising the Irish tricolour across the city.

In recent weeks, lines of tricolours have been erected in the Ballyfermot, Coolock, Finglas and north and south inner city areas.

Dublin City Council says it's considering how to respond to the raising of the flags, which are believed to be part of a campaign by anti-immigration groups.

Labour Councillor Darragh Moriarty, says the far right is using the same tactics as right wing groups in England.

"Well it's clear for some time that those on the far right here have been linking quite heavily with the far right in the UK and up north.

"The Raise The Colours campaign that has been ongoing in the UK, particularly in England, is certainly something the far right in Ireland, who are supposedly Irish patriots, seem to be drawing inspiration from."

He would like to see the flags taken down.

"I think it's really important Dublin City Council, while not putting staff or subcontractors in harms way, do have to get a grip of this issue and confront it.

"The tricolours that have been erected with hateful intent should be taken down because this should be something we celebrate and brings us together, not divides us."
