More Than €640,000 Stolen Through Phone And Email Scams In 2020

There's been an 80% increase in text, call and email fraud over the past two years.

45 cases were reported to gardaí last month.

More than €640,000 was reported stolen through these types of scams last year.

The oldest person to be targetted last month was 88 years old.

Brexit and the pandemic have added a new dimension as the increase in online shopping creates more opportunities for the fraudster.

The most common types are pretending to be from a bank, where people are invited to click a link, and then asked for personal details,

Gardaí are advising people not to respond to these texts and to never give away financial information.
