Students heading to the US on a J1 will be told to make their social media profiles public ahead of travelling.
The US Embassy in Ireland is also asking applicants to include the usernames for social media sites they've used in the past five years.
It says leaving this information out could result in the request being denied, and a ban on future applications.
America says it must be vigilant in the visa process, to ensure those applying for admission do not intend to harm the US or its interests.
