Prison Officers Attacked In Mountjoy Prison

Two prison officers have been injured after they were attacked in Mountjoy Prison.

It's understood they had intervened in a row between a number of prisoners yesterday.

Gardai investigating the incident say one of the prison officers was treated for non-life threatening injuries at the Mater Hospital.

The Irish Prison Service says any act of violence against a prison officer is unacceptable.

The incident is being investigated and Gardai have been notified.

"Unacceptable"

A garda spokesperson says: "Gardaí are investigating the assault of a Prison Officer at Mountjoy Prison, which occurred yesterday afternoon, 19th April 2022. The Officer attended the Mater Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. Investigations are ongoing."

A spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service says: "The Irish Prison Service can confirm an incident occurred in Mountjoy Prison on the 19th April 2022 involving two prison officers. The incident is being investigated and An Garda Siochana have been notified. "Any act of violence against a prison officer is unacceptable. Any criminal act carried out within our prisons, including an assault on a staff member, should be reported to An Gardaí Síochána for investigation and prosecution."
