A commuter group has hit out at what it says is the watering down of safety measures on a Bus Connects route.

The Dublin Commuter Coalition says changes to the Liffey Valley bus corridor, that's due to begin construction this year, will seriously reduce public transport priority on the Ballyfermot road and lead to rat running.

It says the new junction will be less safe for pedestrians and cyclists and that a planned bus lane heading eastbound has been removed.

The organisation has accused the National Transport Authority of bowing to public pressure in favour of motorists.

The Liffey Valley to city centre priority bus corridor will be one of the first to be built as part of a transformation of Dublin's bus network.

Chairperson of the Dublin Commuter Coalition Jason Cullen said:

"The proposed last-minute changes to the Liffey Valley BusConnects route are a complete and utter insult to public & active transport users and the planning process itself. We cannot have such sweeping design changes being made just months ahead of construction after almost a decade of engagement with the planning and judicial processes."

In a statement, the National Transport Authority says following concerns it met with public representatives and the local community.

It says it's exploring possible refinements in Ballyfermot but no final decisions have been made yet.
