A 3-year roadmap has been unveiled for the North East Inner City, aimed at strengthening its regeneration.

It's a continuation of a programme set up to support those affected by years of violence.

During 2019, €6.5m was spent on projects to regenerate the area.

That money was spent on things including a health hub and 10 bed unit for recovering drug addicts.

The Finance Minister and local TD, Paschal Donohue, said the programme "is making a difference".

However, he admitted there is "much that needs to be done", adding "we are hungry to achieve more".

The area's new health hub, in Summerhill, is described as a first of its kind in Ireland.

It provides medical care, dental care and mental health facilities.

Michael Stone, who heads up the programme implementation board, said it's a walk-in service.

"You don't have to have any ID, you can just walk in off the street".

A 10-bed unit for recovering drug addicts in the area was also opened this year.

A number of activities have also been launched, aimed at getting young people to get active.

Dublin footballer Michael Darragh MacAuley helps with that side of the regeneration programme.

He said he is "trying to get the word out to young people who might not know of some of the things going on down here".

A strategic plan for the next 3 years includes continuing efforts to reduce crime in the district.

Fitzgibbon Street Garda Station will re-open, while locals should also see more job opportunities.
