We've all been there, you're having a public conversation when one of you wants to move it away from prying eyes - but first you have to ASK their permission (mortifying, right?!).
Well, social embarrassment be gone! Twitter has updated its rules regarding DMs, and now you could, possibly, send DMs to people who don't follow you.
Before you get all excited and think you can now DM Swifty, Cowell and Corden - you (probably) can't.
They must change their settings, and agree to receive Direct Messages from people they don't follow.
In an update on its blog, Twitter said it's "changing how direct messaging works so that it’s even easier for you to communicate one-to-one or with a chosen group of people, anywhere in the world."
Changes include:
- A setting that allows you to receive Direct Messages from anyone, even if you don’t follow them.
- Updated messaging rules so you can reply to anyone who sends you a DM, regardless of whether or not that person follows you.
- A new DM button on profile pages. You’ll see it on the profiles of people you can send Direct Messages to.
Twitter said that it hopes "these changes help you connect more easily – and directly – on Twitter with the people, causes and businesses you care about most."
Good news too if you get unwanted Direct Messages, Twitter says "you can still take steps to stop them."
The changes to DMs are being rolled out to Twitter accounts, starting from today. Keep an eye for the software update!
