Eight Dublin beaches have been closed to swimmers because of a significant wastewater leak.

Last night's heavy rain triggered an overflow, which sent partially-treated sewage into Dublin Bay and the River Liffey.

It means Seapoint, Sandycove, the 40 foot, Killiney and Whiterock will be closed until 6pm Saturday.

While Dollymount, Merrion and Sandymount beaches are also shut to swimmers.

Dublin City Council says it will continue to monitor water quality at each location and keep the public informed.

The Council says it will lift the prohibition notices as soon as the water quality results are at the required standard.
