Trinity is investigating claims its boat club forced new members to strip and be whipped with bamboo canes.

The college paper, The University Times, reports the "hazing" ceremony took place after a three-course black tie dinner.

It's alleged the night forms part of an initiation process, which takes place at the boat club's annual 'Commons' event.

"Novices" aren't seen as true members, however once they attend the night they are eligible to buy club ties and scarves.

Trinity's rowing club operates from its boat house at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens in Islandbridge.

In a statement to The University Times, the College Press Officer, Caoimhe Ní Lochlainn, said that Trinity takes matters like these "very seriously".

She promised the college will be "fully investigating the alleged incidents".

Anyone with information has been asked to contact the college in confidence.
