Irish Water says it's saved 3 billion litres of water over the past six months by fixing leaks in household pipe.

The utility says it discovered over 50 thousand leaks across the country through its First Fix Free Scheme, which were losing 18 million litres of water a day.

Irish Water has written to 35 thousand households making them aware of potential leaks and it expects that number to double by the time the metering programme is finished.

They said many of the householders who were written to in the first tranche were unaware of leaks on their properties.

If you receive a letter about a leak, Ervia says there are checks you can carry out on your own inside the house before having to call in the professionals.

But, if necessary, they will send engineers for free to investigate if there is a leak on the customer’s external supply pipe between the meter and the house.
