The laws to allow full civil marriage for same-sex couples have completed their journey through the Oireachtas.

The Marriage Bill is now ready to be signed into law next week. Marriages can then begin as soon as a commencement order is signed.

The Justice Minister welcomed what she said was a momentous moment for Ireland.

Frances Fitzgerald says the legislation will be commenced as soon as possible - meaning Ireland could see its first same-sex marriages within a fortnight.

She said "marriage, a cherished institution, has been adopted for a new era but retains its fundamental character. I would say that on the 22nd of May the green jersey turned rainbow".

Campaigners for marriage equality say it's a momentous day - and it's time to go shopping for hats.

Grainne Healy of the Marriage Equality group says it's a momentous day for LGBT people in Ireland. She said "it's 14 years since Katherine Zappone and Ann Louise Gilligan took their case, so we've been working on this for that long."

"Yes, we've put ourselves out of business, but that's what social movements do".

Labour TD John Lyons said “Marriage equality will mean that all couples, regardless of gender, will be able to have their love recognised by the state through the institution of marriage."

Ireland's independent human rights watchdog, the Irish Council for Civil Liberties said "Ireland has been changed for the better by marriage equality and the social movement created by Yes Equality 2015 is being harnessed to bring about other much needed reforms."

A statement explained how the group feels about what it calls Ireland's "pernicious and misogynistic" abortion laws, which it believes will be the next major social movement.

"The ICCL is very proud of its contribution to this ground-breaking moment in the protection of human rights and equality in Ireland, but there is so much more to do".
