A teenager, who can't be named because of his age, has appeared in court charged with the carjacking of a taxi near Terenure.

Just after 5am yesterday morning, a passenger held a meat cleaver to the throat of the 36-year-old driver and demanded money.

The driver managed to escape and raise the alarm at a nearby taxi rank.

He's said to be "extremely traumatised" from the incident.

His attacker then drove the car in what was described as an "erratic and dangerous manner" before crashing into another taxi in Cabra.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested a short time later.

He was charged with the carjacking last night and appeared before the Children's Court today where Judge John O'Connor heard he is in state care and granted him bail on condition he remain within the secure facility.

Meanwhile, Gardai have arrested a 41-year-old man in connection with a separate carjacking in Rathgar last Friday.

He was taken in for questioning after an armed robber jumped into the back of a woman's car and ordered her to return home to pick up her ATM card.

Gardai are now urging motorists to take extra care by locking doors, keeping windows shut and making sure all valuables are out of sight.
