Overcrowding at Tallaght Hospital is putting patient lives at risk.

The warning in a letter sent to the health watchdog, listing a number of issues at the hospital's A&E department.

The president of the Irish Emergency Medicine Trainee Association has written to HIQA warning of the risk to patient lives due to overcrowding.

The body say they believe that conditions at the ED department are dangerous for both staff and patients and have lead to poorer patient outcomes.

The letter has criticised hospital management saying they have ignored recommendations by HIQA published in a report in 2012.

It adds that the trolley numbers remain high, uust today figures from the INMO show that 90 patients remain on trolleys across Dublin hospitals.

The letter goes on to say that that immediately following the inspections there was a specific focus on conditions at the hospital and a zero tolerence approach which improved conditions.

The body is now calling on further inspections to highlight deficiences in quality and safety of care describing the current situations as a human rights issue.
