A status yellow wind warning has been issued for the vast majority of coastal counties.

Gusts of up to 110 kilometres will blow in Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick from 3 o'clock this afternoon.

Dublin, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow ,Meath, Leitrim, Sligo and Donegal will come under the alert from 9 o'clock tonight.

Met Eireann says west to northwest winds will reach mean speed 50 to 65km/h with gusts of 90 to 110km/h, and the combination of strong winds coupled with high tides brings an increased risk of coastal flooding.

The warning is in place until 2am on Thursday.

Met Eireann says the strong winds may lead to coastal flooding with the wind warning set to expire in the early hours of tomorrow morning.
